Setting Up DS5Windows for Grand Theft Auto V (GTA 5)

Whether you’re tearing through Los Santos in a supercar, dodging police helicopters, or grinding GTA Online missions, the DualSense controller feels great in hand for GTA 5. Getting it actually working smoothly on PC, though, can take some setup.

GTA 5 was built primarily around Microsoft’s XInput framework, so launching it through the Rockstar Games Launcher, Epic Games Store, or Steam without proper translation often results in broken camera controls, unresponsive buttons, or the camera spinning on its own.

DS5Windows (DSX) fixes this by translating your DualSense input into a virtual Xbox 360 or DualShock 4 device that the game actually recognizes correctly.

Why GTA 5 Needs This on PC

Players run into a few recurring issues across all launchers:

  • Double input glitches: GTA 5 reads both your physical controller and DSX’s virtual one at the same time, causing weapons to switch rapidly, the radio wheel to flicker, or vehicles to accelerate on their own
  • Unresponsive aircraft controls: driving works fine, but flying helicopters or planes often breaks down because rudder and pitch input doesn’t map correctly over DirectInput
  • No native Bluetooth support on some launchers: copies bought directly through the Rockstar Games Launcher or Epic Games Store often lack proper DualSense driver support over Bluetooth

DSX addresses all three, and also gives you finer deadzone control for driving and flying than most native implementations offer.

Getting Set Up

Grab DSX from its official Steam page, along with two companion pieces it depends on: ViGEmBus, which generates the virtual controller signal, and HidHide, which hides your physical DualSense once the virtual one takes over, especially important here since GTA 5 is particularly prone to reading both at once. Once installed, open DSX, go to Profiles, and create a new one, “GTA 5 PC” works fine as a name. Set the emulated controller to Xbox 360, GTA 5 does have some native DualShock 4 support over wired connections, but Xbox 360 emulation holds up more consistently across Rockstar Games Launcher, Epic Games, and Steam alike, particularly for wireless play, without introducing weirdness into vehicle or aircraft physics. Save it and assign it to your controller.

For HidHide itself: open the Configuration Client, check the box next to your DualSense under Devices to hide it, add DSX to the Applications whitelist so it can still read the physical controller, then enable hiding at the bottom, a lock icon confirms it’s active.

Tuning Deadzones for Driving, Flying, and Shooting

GTA 5 asks a lot of a single controller, driving, flying, and third-person shooting all want slightly different stick behavior, so it’s worth tuning deadzones with that in mind rather than using one generic setting for everything.

Left Stick (Steering and Flight)

Keep the deadzone small enough that steering and flight input feel immediate rather than delayed, while still large enough to avoid drift from an idle stick. A linear output curve tends to work well here, giving you consistent, predictable tilt response for helicopter roll and pitch rather than an exaggerated curve that makes fine control harder.

Right Stick (Camera and Drive-By Aiming)

A modest deadzone helps prevent camera drift during drive-by shootouts without making aim adjustments feel sluggish. Start around a moderate sensitivity and adjust based on feel, faster if you want snappier camera whips, slower if you’re finding yourself overshooting targets.

Triggers (Acceleration and Braking)

For throttle and aim-down-sights, lowering the trigger’s activation threshold so it responds earlier in the pull can make launching off the line or reacting quickly during a police chase feel noticeably snappier. As always, there’s no single universally correct number, test a few settings and go with whatever feels responsive without being twitchy.

Optional: Gyro Controls for Flying

If helicopters and planes feel awkward with standard stick input, you can map the DualSense’s motion sensor to help with roll and pitch during flight.

  1. In your GTA 5 profile, open the Gyro tab.
  2. Set the gyro output to control the left stick axis (or whichever axis handles flight roll/pitch in your setup).
  3. Bind gyro activation to a trigger, L1 or L2 work well, so it only kicks in when you’re actually holding that button during flight rather than being active constantly.

With this set up, small physical tilts of the controller translate into fine pitch and bank adjustments, which can make precision landings noticeably easier.

Launcher-Specific Notes

Rockstar Games Launcher and Epic Games Store: make sure DSX shows as actively connected before hitting Play, and avoid running Steam in the background if you can, since Steam Input can interfere with DSX’s mappings even when Steam isn’t the launcher you’re using.

Steam: go to Steam Settings, then Controller, and consider disabling PlayStation Controller Support globally. Then right-click Grand Theft Auto V in your Library, open Properties, go to Controller, and set the override to Disable Steam Input. Running Steam Input alongside DSX is one of the more common causes of double input specifically in GTA Online menus.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Radio wheel scrolls on its own: This is the double-input bug, confirm HidHide is active and DSX is properly whitelisted.

Controller disconnects over Bluetooth: This is usually signal interference or a power-saving setting kicking in, try a wired USB connection to rule out Bluetooth entirely, or move closer to reduce interference from other wireless devices.

Xbox prompts appear instead of PS5 icons: Expected behavior when emulating an Xbox 360 controller, this isn’t a bug, it’s just how XInput emulation presents itself on screen.
