DSX/DS5Windows Troubleshooting Guide

Having trouble using a PS5 DualSense controller on a Windows PC? The problem is not always DSX itself. Windows, Bluetooth, USB, Steam, the game, controller drivers, and other controller software can all affect how the controller reaches the game.

The easiest way to find the problem is to test each part separately.

The older DSX GitHub release, v1.4.9, is no longer supported or updated. Current DSX development is distributed through Steam, so some older troubleshooting guides may describe a setup that no longer matches the current version.

Before Changing Anything

Do not immediately reinstall DSX, drivers, Bluetooth software, Steam, and HidHide all at once.

That can make the original problem harder to find.

Start with the simplest setup:

  • Close DSX and other controller-mapping software.
  • Disconnect the DualSense.
  • Connect it directly to the PC with a known-good USB data cable.
  • Check whether Windows detects it.Test the controller before changing DSX settings.

This gives you a useful starting point.

If Windows does not detect the controller, start with the connection.

If Windows detects it but DSX does not, look at DSX and other controller software.

If DSX detects it but the game does not, check the controller mode, Steam Input, emulation, HidHide, and the game’s own controller support.

DS5Windows/DSX Is Not Detecting My Controller

First check whether Windows detects the DualSense. DSX cannot use a controller that Windows cannot access.

If Windows detects the controller but DSX does not:

  • Close DSX.
  • Disconnect the DualSense.
  • Reconnect it.Close other controller-mapping programs.
  • Open DSX again.
  • Check whether the controller appears.

Also check whether the problem happens with USB, Bluetooth, or both.

If another controller program is already using the device, close it before testing DSX again.

For older DSX v1.4.9 installations, driver requirements can be different from the current Steam version. Avoid mixing old driver instructions with a current DSX installation.

Windows Does Not Detect the DualSense

If Windows itself does not see the controller, DSX is not the first thing to troubleshoot.

If You Are Using USB

Check the cable first.

A USB-C cable can charge the controller without providing the data connection needed for communication with Windows.

Try:

  • Another USB-C data cable
  • Another USB port
  • A USB port directly on the PC
  • Disconnecting and reconnecting the controller
  • Restarting Windows

If another cable makes the controller appear, the original cable was the problem.

If You Are Using Bluetooth

Check that Bluetooth is enabled in Windows.

If the controller was previously paired, remove the old Bluetooth entry and pair it again.

Microsoft recommends checking Bluetooth settings, removing and re-adding a device when needed, and checking for driver or connection problems when Bluetooth devices fail to connect.

Bluetooth Pairing Does Not Work

To put the DualSense into Bluetooth pairing mode:

  1.  Make sure the controller is turned off.
  2. Press and hold the PS button + Create button.
  3. Keep holding until the light around the touchpad begins flashing.
  4. Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices in Windows.
  5. Select Add device → Bluetooth.
  6. Look for the controller, usually shown as Wireless Controller.
  7. Select it to pair.

If the controller does not appear:

  • Turn Bluetooth off and back on.
  • Remove an old Wireless Controller entry.
  • Put the DualSense into pairing mode again.
  • Restart Windows.
  • Test the controller through USB.

If Bluetooth works with another device but not your PC, the PC’s Bluetooth setup becomes more likely to be the problem.

Bluetooth Connects but the Controller Keeps Disconnecting

First test the controller through USB.

If USB stays connected while Bluetooth keeps disconnecting, the problem is more likely related to the Bluetooth connection, adapter, driver, interference, or range.

Try:

  • Pairing the controller again.
  • Restarting Windows.
  • Moving the controller closer to the PC.
  • Checking Bluetooth driver updates.
  • Temporarily disconnecting unnecessary Bluetooth devices.
  • Testing without a Bluetooth hub or unusual adapter setup.

Microsoft also documents possible Bluetooth interference from some USB 3.0 devices.

If the controller disconnects through both USB and Bluetooth, test another cable, USB port, or another PC if available.

Steam Detects the Controller but DSX Does Not

If Steam detects the DualSense but DSX does not, Windows is already receiving controller input.

The problem is now more specific to how DSX or another application is accessing the controller.

Try:

  • Close DSX.
  • Close other controller-mapping software.
  • Restart Steam.
  • Reconnect the controller.
  • Open DSX again.

Do not run several controller translation programs while troubleshooting.

Examples include:

  • DS4Windows
  • DSX
  • Steam Input
  • Other controller remappers
  • Virtual controller software

One controller can be passed through several layers, which makes it difficult to tell which program is causing the problem.

The Game Does Not Detect the Controller

First ask one question:

Does DSX detect the controller? If DSX does not detect it. Go back to the Windows and DSX detection steps.

If DSX detects it

Now check how the controller is being presented to the game.

Depending on the setup, DSX can provide different controller output modes, including virtual Xbox 360 or DualShock 4 output.

Some games support DualSense directly. Others work better with XInput-style controllers.

There is no single controller mode that works best for every game.

The Game Shows an Xbox Controller

If DSX is using Xbox 360 emulation, this is expected. The controller in your hands is still a DualSense. The game is seeing the virtual Xbox controller created by DSX.

You may therefore see:

  • A, B, X and Y prompts
  • Xbox controller names
  • Xbox button layouts

It does not necessarily mean the DualSense is broken.

If you want the game to communicate with the DualSense directly, test the game without Xbox emulation.

If the game only supports XInput properly, Xbox emulation may be the better choice.

The Game Sees Two Controllers

This is commonly called double input.

For example, one button press may cause two actions, or a game may show two controllers when only one physical controller is connected.

This can happen when the game sees both:

Physical DualSense + Virtual Controller

The virtual controller is useful for games that need it, but the physical controller may also need to be hidden from the game.

How HidHide Helps With Double Input

HidHide is designed to hide selected HID devices from applications.

Its configuration allows you to choose which devices are hidden and which applications are allowed to access those hidden devices.

When using a virtual controller, a typical setup can look like:

DualSense → DSX → Virtual Controller → Game

HidHide can prevent the game from also seeing the physical DualSense.

If you use HidHide:

  • Open the HidHide Configuration Client.
  • Check that device hiding is enabled.
  • Select the physical controller you want to hide.
  • Make sure the application that needs access is correctly allowed.
  • Reconnect the controller if required.
  • Test the game again.

Do not hide the controller blindly.

If the wrong device is hidden, or the application that needs access is not allowed, the controller can appear to stop working.

HidHide Is Hiding My Controller Completely

This is the opposite problem.

If HidHide is enabled and the wrong application is hidden or not whitelisted, the controller may appear to have stopped working.

Open the HidHide Configuration Client and check:

  • Is device hiding enabled?
  • Is the correct controller selected?
  • Is the application that needs the controller allowed?
  • Are you testing the physical controller or the virtual controller?

HidHide’s configuration separates the applications allowed to access hidden devices from the devices that are hidden.

If you do not need controller emulation, temporarily disabling device hiding can help determine whether HidHide is causing the problem.

The Virtual Controller Is Missing

If you are trying to use a virtual Xbox 360 or DualShock 4 controller and the game cannot see it, first identify which DSX version you are using.

Older DSX v1.4.9 setups used ViGEmBus for virtual controller emulation.

That does not mean every current DSX installation needs ViGEmBus.

If the game already supports the DualSense directly, you may not need a virtual controller at all.

For an older DSX setup, check whether the required virtual controller component is installed and working.

DSX and Steam Input Are Causing Problems

Steam Input and DSX can both change how a controller is presented to a game.

Using both is not automatically wrong, but it can make troubleshooting harder.

Possible symptoms include:

  • Double input
  • Wrong button prompts
  • Controller not appearing
  • Switching between controller types
  • Native Dual
  • Sense features not working as expected

For a clean test, try one controller path at a time.

Direct DualSense

DualSense → Game

DSX Emulation

DualSense → DSX → Virtual Controller → Game

Steam Input

DualSense → Steam Input → Game

The best path depends on the game.

Do not permanently disable Steam Input simply because one game has a problem. Some games may behave differently depending on their own controller support.

A Steam Game Works With DualSense but Another Does Not

This can happen because controller support is not identical across games.

One game may have native DualSense support.

Another may expect an XInput controller.

Another may use Steam Input.

If the controller works in one game, do not immediately reinstall DSX when another game fails.

Check the second game’s controller support first and test the simplest controller path it supports.

A Non-Steam Game Does Not Detect the Controller

Non-Steam games do not automatically use the same controller handling as Steam games.

First check what the game expects.

If it expects XInput, you can test an Xbox-style virtual controller.

If it supports DualSense directly, test the controller without unnecessary emulation.

If Steam Input and DSX are both active, remove the extra layer while testing.

The goal is to give the game one controller input path that it understands.

A Game Has Native DualSense Support

If a game already supports the DualSense directly, try it without DSX first.

This is especially useful when testing:

  • Adaptive triggers
  • Haptic feedback
  • Touchpad
  • Motion controls
  • Other native DualSense features

Adding a virtual controller can change what the game sees.

If the game works correctly without DSX, you may not need DSX for that game.

Use DSX when you need something it provides, such as profiles, remapping, testing, or virtual controller output.

Adaptive Triggers Are Not Working

Adaptive triggers require game support.

DSX cannot make every PC game support adaptive triggers.

If the game supports the feature but it does not work:

  • Test the controller through USB.
  • Check whether another controller layer is active.
  • Test the game without DSX if it has native DualSense support.
  • Check the game’s controller settings.
  • Update the DualSense firmware.

PlayStation notes that DualSense features on PC depend on game support, and some features may require a USB connection.

Haptic Feedback Is Not Working

First check whether the game actually supports DualSense haptic feedback.

Then test:

  • USB connection
  • Native DualSense mode
  • DSX closed
  • Steam Input settings
  • Other controller-mapping software

Do not treat ordinary vibration and DualSense haptic feedback as exactly the same feature.

The game has to support the feature for native haptic feedback to work.

Current DSX development also includes Bluetooth audio and haptic functionality, so older guides that describe all DSX haptic functionality as USB-only may be describing an older version.

Vibration Does Not Work

Check whether the problem is:

  • Every game
  • One game
  • Native DualSense mode
  • Virtual controller mode

Then test whether vibration works with DSX closed.

If vibration works in another game, the problem may be related to the game’s controller implementation rather than the controller itself.

The Game Shows the Wrong Button Prompts

f you see Xbox A/B/X/Y prompts while holding a DualSense, check whether DSX is using Xbox emulation.

That is normal when the game is receiving a virtual Xbox controller.

For PlayStation-style prompts, the game needs to recognize the DualSense as a DualSense and support those prompts.

Some games also have their own controller-prompt settings.

The Touchpad Does Not Work

The DualSense touchpad is not guaranteed to work the same way in every PC game.

A game may:

  • Support the DualSense touchpad directly.
  • Treat it as another controller input.
  • Ignore it.
  • Receive a virtual controller instead.

If the game supports native DualSense input, test the controller without virtual emulation.

Motion Controls or Gyro Do Not Work

Not every PC game supports DualSense motion controls.

Changing the DSX controller mode cannot automatically add native motion support to a game that does not support it.

Check the game’s controller support first.

If another mapping layer is active, it can also change what input the game receives.

Controller Audio or Headset Features Do Not Work

Audio behavior can depend on Windows, the game, the connection method, and the DSX version.

If the controller’s speaker, microphone, or headset features are not working:

  • Check Windows sound settings.
  • Check the game’s selected audio devices.
  • Test the controller through USB.
  • Close other audio-routing software.Check the DSX version and available audio settings.

Do not assume an old DSX guide describes the current Steam version.

The Controller Works but the Microphone Does Not

The DualSense microphone is an audio device, so this can be a different problem from controller input.

Check:

  • Windows input device
  • Game voice-input device
  • Microphone permissions
  • Controller audio settings

If the microphone works in Windows but not in the game, check the game’s selected microphone.

The Controller Keeps Disconnecting

First determine whether the problem is USB or Bluetooth.

USB

Try:

  • Another USB cable
  • Another USB port
  • A direct connection instead of a hub

Bluetooth

Try:

  • Pairing the controller again
  • Restarting Bluetooth
  • Restarting Windows
  • Moving closer to the PC
  • Checking Bluetooth drivers
  • Testing through USB

If the controller disconnects on multiple PCs with different cables and connection methods, start considering a controller hardware problem.

The Controller Stops Working After Sleep

Windows can handle a controller differently after waking from sleep.

Try:

  • Disconnect the controller.
  • Wait a few seconds.
  • Reconnect it.
  • Restart DSX if necessary.
  • For Bluetooth, reconnect or pair the controller again if Windows no longer sees it.

If the issue happens every time the PC wakes, test USB and Bluetooth separately.

The Controller Stops Working After Switching USB and Bluetooth

Test one connection at a time.

For Bluetooth:

  • Disconnect the USB cable completely.
  • Remove the old Bluetooth entry if necessary.
  • Pair the controller again.

For USB:

  • Connect it directly with a known-good data cable.
  • Test it without Bluetooth.

This makes it easier to determine whether the problem follows the controller or the connection method.

The Controller Works in Windows but Not in One Specific Game

This is an important clue.

If Windows detects the controller and another game works, do not immediately reinstall DSX.

Check the game.

Possible causes include:

  • The game expects XInput.
  • The game supports native DualSense.
  • DSX is using a virtual controller.
  • Steam Input is translating the controller.
  • Another controller is detected first.
  • The game does not support the DualSense feature you are testing.

A controller that works everywhere except one game is not automatically a broken controller.

The Controller Works in Steam but Not in a Non-Steam Game

Steam can provide its own controller handling.

A non-Steam game may not receive the same controller output.

Check what the non-Steam game supports.

If it expects XInput, test an Xbox-style virtual controller.

If it supports DualSense directly, test native input.

Avoid running several controller-mapping layers while testing.

Two Controllers Appear When I Have One DualSense

If emulation is enabled, check whether Windows or the game is seeing:

  • The physical DualSense
  • The virtual controller

If both are visible, this can cause double input.

Check your HidHide configuration if you intentionally use a virtual controller.

DSX Worked Yesterday but Not Today

Think about what changed.

Check:

  • Windows updates
  • DSX updates
  • Steam updates
  • Controller firmware
  • Bluetooth changes
  • Driver changes
  • New controller software
  • Game updates

If the problem started immediately after a specific change, test that change first.

Do not reinstall everything before identifying what changed.

Windows Update Changed Controller Behavior

If the controller stopped working after a Windows update, first test the controller directly through USB.

Then check Bluetooth or virtual controller behavior separately.

If the physical DualSense works but an Xbox virtual controller no longer appears, the problem may be related to the virtual-controller side rather than the DualSense itself.

DS5Windows/DSX Says Drivers Are Missing

First check the DSX version.

Older DSX v1.4.9 documentation used specific driver components for emulation.

Current DSX should not automatically be treated as requiring the same driver setup.

Do not install old drivers simply because an old guide tells you to.

Check our Drivers guide for the difference between current and older DSX setups.

HidHide Was Installed but Nothing Changed

Installing HidHide does not automatically mean every controller will be hidden.

HidHide uses its configuration to decide:

  • Which devices are hidden
  • Which applications can access hidden devices
  • Whether device hiding is enabled

These settings are handled through the HidHide Configuration Client.

If double input continues, check the physical controller and virtual controller separately.

I Uninstalled DSX and the Controller Stopped Working in Games

Uninstalling DSX can change the controller path used by a game.

For example, if the game was previously receiving a virtual Xbox controller from DSX, removing that layer can leave the game with no controller it understands.

Check whether the game previously used:

Native DualSense

or

DSX virtual controller

If the game supports DualSense directly, test it without DSX.

If it depended on virtual controller output, you may need to restore the appropriate controller setup.

The Controller Is Not Charging Properly

If the controller works but does not appear to charge correctly:

  • Try another USB cable.
  • Try another USB port.
  • Test another power source.
  • Check the battery level again after reconnecting.
  • Test the controller on another device if possible.

If the controller has a persistent battery or charging problem, software such as DSX cannot repair the hardware.

The DualSense Has a Hardware Problem

Software troubleshooting should stop when the same problem follows the controller across different setups.

Examples include:

  • A button does not work on multiple devices.
  • A stick constantly drifts.
  • USB disconnects with different cables and PCs.
  • Bluetooth fails on different devices.
  • The controller does not respond after a reset.
  • Battery behavior is abnormal.

At that point, use PlayStation’s official troubleshooting and repair resources.

Reset the DualSense

If connection problems continue, resetting the controller can help rule out a controller-side problem.

The DualSense has a small reset button on the back near the Sony logo.

PlayStation recommends pressing and holding the reset button for at least five seconds as part of its controller troubleshooting process.

After resetting:

  • Connect the controller through USB.
  • Let Windows detect it.
  • Test the controller.
  • Only then add DSX or other controller software.

This gives you a clean test.

Update the DualSense Firmware

Controller firmware can affect connection and controller behavior.

Sony provides PlayStation Accessories for Windows, which can be used to update compatible PlayStation controller software.

If you are troubleshooting unusual controller behavior, updating the firmware is worth checking before assuming DSX is broken.

How to Test the Problem Properly

Instead of reinstalling everything, follow this order.

Test 1: Windows

Connect the DualSense directly through USB.

Windows does not detect it:
Check the cable, USB port, Bluetooth, controller, or Windows connection.

Windows detects it:
Continue.

Test 2: DSX

Open DSX.

DSX does not detect it:
Check DSX, other controller software, Steam Input, HidHide, and the components required by your DSX version.

DSX detects it:
Continue.

Test 3: Controller Output

Check whether you are using:

  • Direct/native DualSense
  • Xbox 360 emulation
  • DualShock 4 emulation

Test 4: Game

Test the game with only the controller path you actually need.

Test 5: HidHide

If you are using a virtual controller and the game sees two controllers, check HidHide.

This process is much more useful than reinstalling every driver at once.

A Simple Way to Find the Problem

Controller does not appear in Windows

→ Check cable, USB port, Bluetooth, pairing, firmware, and hardware.

Windows sees it but DSX does not

→ Check DSX version, other controller software, Steam Input, HidHide, and required components.

DSX sees it but the game does not

→ Check the controller mode, game support, Steam Input, and virtual controller output.

Game sees two controllers

→ Check the physical controller, virtual controller, and HidHide.

Controller works but DualSense features do not

→ Check game support, native mode, connection type, firmware, Steam Input, and DSX version.

Works in one game but not another

→ Treat it as a game compatibility or configuration problem before reinstalling DSX.

When You Should Use Native DualSense Mode

Use the simplest setup that works.

If the game supports the DualSense properly: DualSense → Game

is usually simpler than: DualSense → DSX → Virtual Controller → Game

DSX becomes useful when you need features or controller output that the game does not provide.

When Does Xbox Emulation Make Sense?

Xbox/XInput emulation can help with games that do not properly recognize the DualSense.

The game then receives a virtual Xbox controller rather than a native DualSense.

This can make the controller usable in games that expect XInput.

The trade-off is that the game may show Xbox controls and may not receive DualSense-specific features.

Common Mistakes That Make Troubleshooting Worse

Installing Several Controller Mappers

Running several controller translation programs at the same time can create confusing input paths.

Hiding the Controller Too Early

HidHide can hide the physical controller from applications. Make sure the virtual controller works before hiding the physical device.

Changing Several Settings at Once

If you change five things and the problem disappears, you do not know which change fixed it.

Following an Old DSX Guide

DSX v1.4.9 is no longer supported. Current DSX can have different requirements and features.

Assuming USB and Bluetooth Are Identical

Some DualSense features have different requirements depending on the game and connection method.

Assuming Every Game Supports DualSense

Controller support varies between games.

If Nothing Here Fixes the Problem

Do not randomly install more drivers.

Write down:

  • Windows 10 or Windows 11
  • DSX version
  • DualSense or DualSense Edge
  • USB or Bluetooth
  • Steam or non-Steam game
  • Native or virtual controller mode
  • Whether HidHide is installed
  • Whether another controller mapper is running
  • Whether Windows detects the controller
  • Whether DSX detects the controller
  • Whether another game works

This information makes further troubleshooting much easier.

If the same hardware problem continues on another PC and with different cables or connection methods, check PlayStation’s official support and repair options.
