If you connected your DualSense to your PC and went looking for a “DS5 Windows” app, you likely came up empty, because the team behind DS4Windows never released a DualSense-specific successor under that name. What you actually want is DualSenseX (DSX), developed by Paliverse specifically to bring DualSense’s unique features to Windows.
This guide covers everything you need to get DSX set up and configured properly.
Why You Need This At All
Unlike Xbox controllers, a DualSense doesn’t work automatically with most PC games even after pairing, Windows and most games expect a different input format than what the DualSense sends natively. DSX bridges that gap by creating a virtual controller that games actually recognize.
What DSX does:
- Intercepts your controller’s raw input in real time
- Translates it into a standard Xbox 360-compatible format
- Converts DualSense-specific data, adaptive trigger tension, haptic feedback, into something Windows and your games can use
Installing DSX
Get it from Steam. This is the current, actively maintained version, and it’s freemium: there’s a free tier with core functionality, plus an optional one-time purchase (roughly $5–10) that unlocks the full feature set. You don’t have to pay to try it.
A note on the GitHub version: Paliverse’s original standalone build is still visible on GitHub, but it’s no longer updated or supported, development has fully moved to the Steam version. If you’re setting DSX up today, Steam is the version to use regardless of whether you stick with the free tier or upgrade.
Installing Required Drivers
When you first launch DSX, it’ll prompt you to set up:
- ViGEmBus (required): creates the virtual Xbox 360 controller your games actually detect
- HidHide (optional but recommended): hides your physical controller from games so you don’t run into the double-input glitch where menus skip items or buttons register twice
Setting Up Emulation Mode
In the Controller tab, choose your output:
- Xbox 360 emulation gives you the broadest compatibility across PC games
- DualShock 4 emulation is worth using in games that specifically display PlayStation-style button prompts
Configuring Adaptive Triggers
This is one of DSX’s standout features. In the Adaptive Triggers tab, you’ll find several preset options:
- Normal (default): no resistance
- Resistance: steady, consistent pull, works well for racing game accelerators
- Recoil-style presets: simulate a vibrating kickback as you pull through, useful for shooters
- Two-stage presets: resistance builds, then a distinct point partway through, before releasing fully, good for anything with a “draw and release” feel like a bow
Exact preset names can vary a bit between DSX versions, so treat these as general categories rather than fixed labels you’ll see word for word.
Bluetooth vs Wired USB
Over Bluetooth, you get:
- Basic button mapping
- Lightbar customization
- Battery monitoring
- Static (non-adaptive) trigger behavior in some configurations
Over USB, you additionally get the most precise adaptive trigger response and full audio-to-haptic translation, where game audio gets routed into the controller’s haptic motors for dynamic feedback. Worth knowing: Paliverse has added Bluetooth audio and haptics support for DualSense and DualSense Edge in recent updates, so Bluetooth isn’t as limited on this front as it used to be, but USB still gives you the most detailed, precise result.
Troubleshooting
Double input issues (game reading both your physical and virtual controller): install and configure HidHide to hide your physical controller’s hardware ID from everything except DSX.
Steam Input conflicts (erratic behavior or unexpected mouse-like tracking): right-click your game in Steam, go to Properties, then Controller, and set the override to Disable Steam Input.
