Getting Started with DS5Windows/DualSenseX

This guide walks you through downloading, installing, and setting up DS5Windows (DSX) to use your PlayStation 5 DualSense controller on Windows 10 or 11. By the end, you’ll have your controller connected, adaptive triggers and haptic feedback working, and profiles set up the way you want them.

What Is DS5 Windows

DS5Windows (DSX) is a controller management tool built specifically for the PS5 DualSense controller, made by Paliverse. It creates a virtual gamepad so your DualSense works properly with PC games, and unlocks features Windows doesn’t expose on its own: adaptive triggers, haptic feedback, button remapping, and custom profiles.

You might also see it called DualSenseX, which is its full name. DS5Windows is just how a lot of people search for it, since it’s the DualSense equivalent of tools like DS4Windows. You’re in the right place either way.

Before You Begin

Before installing DS5 Windows, make sure your system meets the basic requirements and your controller is ready to connect.

System Requirements

System Requirements:

  • Windows 10 or Windows 11 (64-bit recommended)
  • PlayStation 5 DualSense controller
  • USB-C cable or a Bluetooth adapter
  • Latest Microsoft .NET 8.0 Desktop Runtime
  • ViGEmBus driver (required)
  • HidHide driver (recommended)

Important Setup Guidelines

  • Launch DSX before starting your game, not after
  • Install any drivers it prompts you for on first run
  • Avoid running other controller-mapping tools at the same time (they tend to conflict with each other)
  • Use HidHide if you run into double inputs
  • Keep DSX updated to the latest version

Download DS5 Windows

  • Get DS5Windows (DSX) from the official Steam page. Steam is the only actively maintained version right now, Paliverse retired the old GitHub build in favor of it.
  • Install it through Steam like any other app.
  • Run it as administrator the first time.
  • On first launch, DSX may ask where to store your settings. The default option works fine for most people.

Installing Required Drivers

DS5Windos (DSX) will prompt you to install these on first run if they’re missing:

  • ViGEmBus Required. This is what creates the virtual controller your games actually detect.
  • HidHide Optional but recommended. Prevents games from seeing both your real controller and the virtual one at once, which is what causes double inputs.

Install whatever it prompts you for, then restart your PC if it asks you to.

Connecting Your DualSense Controller

USB (recommended)

  1. Plug your DualSense in with a USB-C cable
  2. Windows should detect it automatically
  3. Open DSX to confirm it shows up

Wired is the lowest-latency, most stable option if you have the choice.

Bluetooth

  1. Open Windows Settings, then Bluetooth & Devices
  2. Click Add Device, then Bluetooth
  3. Hold the PS and Share buttons together until the lightbar starts flashing
  4. Select “Wireless Controller” from the list

If you’re going wireless, a decent Bluetooth adapter makes a noticeable difference in latency and stability.

Preventing Double Input Issues

If Windows ends up seeing both your physical controller and the virtual one DSX creates, you’ll get duplicate button presses in games. To avoid this:

  1. Install and set up HidHide
  2. Add DSX to HidHide’s whitelist so it can still access the hidden device
  3. Always launch DSX before starting your game

First-Time Configuration

Once your controller is connected:

  1. Open DSX and confirm your controller appears in the interface
  2. Adjust trigger resistance, vibration, and stick sensitivity to your liking
  3. Set up custom profiles if you want different settings per game
  4. Save your configuration

Your settings apply automatically the next time the controller reconnects.

Using DS5Windows (DSX) with Games

DSX works across most PC storefronts, including Steam, Epic Games Store, Battle.net, and standalone titles.

A few tips for smoother results:

  • Turn off Steam Input if you notice conflicts
  • Don’t run other controller tools alongside DSX
  • Keep DSX running in the background while you play

Some newer games with native DualSense support may actually work better without DSX running at all, so it’s worth testing both ways if something feels off.

Troubleshooting and Support

Controller not detected:

  1. Check your USB cable or Bluetooth pairing
  2. Restart DSX
  3. Reinstall the drivers
  4. Reboot your system

Lag or random disconnects:

  1. Switch to a wired connection if possible
  2. Update your Bluetooth drivers
  3. Remove and re-pair the device
