If you just got a DualSense controller for PC, your first instinct might be to immediately install some kind of mapping software, for years, that was basically a requirement for using a PlayStation controller on Windows at all. That’s changed a fair amount. Depending on where and how you play, you genuinely might not need DSX at all, and running it by default in some cases can actively make things worse, not better.
Whether you need it comes down almost entirely to where you’re buying and launching your games from.
When You Don’t Need It
Steam: Valve built deep DualSense and DualShock support directly into the Steam client. The moment you connect over Bluetooth or USB, Steam wraps the input into a usable layout on its own, no external app needed. You can download community profiles, configure gyro, and adjust deadzones entirely within Steam’s own controller settings.
Native Sony PC ports: titles like Ghost of Tsushima, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, The Last of Us Part I, or Helldivers 2 have DualSense support built directly into the game. Connect over wired USB-C, and the game reads the controller’s hardware directly, full adaptive triggers and haptic feedback included. If you run DSX at the same time, it masks your controller as a virtual Xbox 360 pad instead, which strips away exactly the native features these games were built to use. For these specific titles, DSX should be closed, not running in the background.
When You Genuinely Need It
Xbox Game Pass for PC: Microsoft’s app framework is built strictly around XInput. A DualSense connected without translation shows up as a generic DirectInput device, and Game Pass titles typically won’t respond to it correctly, dead sticks or unresponsive buttons are common. DSX (or a similar emulation tool) bridges this gap by presenting your controller as a virtual Xbox 360 device that Game Pass actually recognizes.
Other storefronts, case by case: EA App, Epic Games Store, and Ubisoft Connect leave controller support entirely up to individual developers. Some newer titles include native PlayStation controller support even on these platforms, but plenty of older or smaller titles don’t, and for those, DSX fills the same gap it does for Game Pass.
A Correction on Emulators and Motion Controls
You may see this claim elsewhere: that DSX includes a built-in UDP motion server (commonly associated with port 26760) for streaming gyro data into console emulators like RPCS3, Cemu, or Ryujinx. That’s not accurate as a DSX feature, this UDP motion server functionality (based on the cemuhook protocol) is specifically documented as a DS4Windows feature, not something confirmed to exist in DSX.
If you’re building an emulation setup and need motion data streamed into an emulator, DS4Windows (which does have this built in) or a dedicated cemuhook-compatible tool is the more accurate path, rather than assuming DSX covers this use case. It’s a good example of how DS4Windows and DSX get conflated online, since they solve overlapping but not identical problems.
The Practical Takeaway
Rather than defaulting to running DSX constantly, it’s worth thinking about it per-game:
- Playing through Steam or a native Sony PC port over wired USB? Leave DSX closed.
- Playing through Xbox Game Pass, or an older title on EA App, Epic, or Ubisoft Connect without native controller support? DSX is genuinely useful here.
- Running console emulators that need motion control data specifically? DSX isn’t the tool for that particular job, look at DS4Windows or a dedicated cemuhook server instead.
Running DSX unnecessarily alongside a game that already handles your controller natively isn’t just pointless, it can actively degrade your experience by masking hardware features the game was designed to use directly.
