The PS5 DualSense controller has two separate lighting zones: the RGB lightbar wrapped around the touchpad, and a row of small Player LEDs just below it. On PlayStation, you don’t get much say over either, the lightbar mostly just reflects whatever the game or system decides. On PC, DS5Windows (DSX) hands you full control over both: static colors, a rainbow cycle, a battery-level indicator, or turning everything off to squeeze out more playtime on a single charge.
This guide covers how to configure each of these, plus what to do when the lightbar doesn’t behave the way you’d expect.
Why Bother Customizing the Lightbar
Beyond just looking good, there are a few practical reasons people end up adjusting these settings. Color-coding controllers by player slot helps in local co-op. Dimming or disabling the lightbar meaningfully extends battery life on wireless sessions, since the LEDs draw power continuously whether you’re paying attention to them or not. And some people simply want a stealthy, all-black controller instead of a glowing blue strip lighting up a dark room.
Setting a Static Custom Color
If you want a specific color to match your setup, stream overlay, or a particular game profile, this is the simplest option.
Steps
- Open DSX, go to the Profiles tab, and click Edit on your active DualSense profile.
- Click the Lightbar tab on the right-hand panel.
- Under Custom Color, click the color swatch to open the RGB picker. Choose your color visually, or enter specific RGB or Hex values if you want an exact match to something, brand colors, a game’s UI theme, whatever you’re going for.
- Click Save. The lightbar on your controller updates immediately, you don’t need to restart DSX or reconnect the controller.
One thing worth knowing: this static color only applies while DSX is actively managing the controller. If you close DSX or the controller reconnects before DSX picks it back up, it may briefly flash back to its default blue.
Rainbow Mode
If you’d rather have the lightbar cycle through colors instead of sitting on one, DSX includes a Rainbow mode.
Steps
- Under Lightbar Mode, select Rainbow instead of Custom Color.
- Adjust the speed slider to your preference. A slower cycle feels more ambient and subtle, a faster one is more attention-grabbing, it’s entirely down to taste.
Keep in mind Rainbow mode, like any lightbar activity, uses more battery than having the light off entirely, though the difference is usually small enough not to matter for a normal play session.
Showing Battery Level on the Player LEDs
This is the part that trips people up the most, because it’s easy to assume the main lightbar itself changes color as your battery drains. It doesn’t. Battery-level indication happens through the separate row of small Player LEDs below the touchpad, not the RGB lightbar around it.
How to Enable It
In the Lightbar or Player LED settings within DSX, enable the Battery Level option. This lights up more or fewer of the small indicator LEDs depending on how much charge remains, and can also flash while the controller is actively charging, useful if you’ve plugged it in and want a quick glance to confirm it’s actually drawing power.
Important Distinction
The main touchpad lightbar keeps whatever color or mode you’ve set (static or rainbow) completely independent of battery level. If you want both, a visual battery gauge and a specific lightbar color, you can run them simultaneously since they’re controlled separately.
Saving Battery by Dimming or Disabling the Lightbar
Since the lightbar draws power the entire time it’s lit, turning it down is one of the more effective ways to stretch battery life on longer wireless sessions.
Options
- Lower the brightness slider to reduce LED power draw while keeping the color itself intact, a good middle ground if you don’t want to lose the visual entirely.
- Set your custom color to black (RGB 0, 0, 0), or drop the brightness slider to 0%, either effectively turns the lightbar off.
- Keep the Player LED battery indicator running separately if you still want a way to check charge level at a glance without the full lightbar staying on.
Troubleshooting Lightbar Issues
Steam Overriding Your Lightbar Color
If Steam is running alongside DSX, Steam’s own controller input handling can sometimes take over and override whatever color you’ve set in DSX. This usually shows up as the lightbar snapping back to a default color (often based on player slot) as soon as you launch a game through Steam.
To fix it, go to Steam Settings, then Controller, and either disable PlayStation Controller Support for that title, or check whether Steam has its own lightbar color setting for the game that’s conflicting with DSX.
Lightbar Resets When You Launch a Game
If your lightbar setting reverts the moment a game starts, double-check that your DSX profile is actually assigned to the controller slot that shows as active on the main screen. A mismatched profile, where DSX is applying settings to a different slot than the one your game is actually reading from, is the most common cause of this.
Lightbar Not Responding at All
If changes in DSX don’t seem to affect the physical controller regardless of connection type, try reconnecting the controller (unplug and replug for USB, or remove and re-pair for Bluetooth) and confirm DSX shows it as actively detected before making further changes.
