Windows doesn’t natively understand a DualSense controller the way it understands an Xbox controller, it’s built around Microsoft’s XInput standard, and Sony’s controller speaks a different language. The two most common ways to bridge that gap are Valve’s built-in Steam Input and DSX (DualSenseX). Which one makes more sense depends heavily on where and how you actually play.
Where Your Games Live Matters Most
This is really the biggest factor in choosing between them.
Steam Input works entirely within Steam itself. Launch a game through Steam, and it handles the translation automatically, genuinely plug-and-play for anything in your Steam library. The catch is everything outside Steam: Xbox Game Pass, Epic Games Store, standalone emulators, none of these get Steam Input’s help unless you manually add them as non-Steam shortcuts, which doesn’t always work cleanly and can occasionally cause its own conflicts.
DSX works at the system level instead, creating a virtual controller that Windows sees before any specific game or launcher even opens. That means it works consistently across Game Pass, Epic, cloud gaming, and more, without needing per-launcher workarounds, since it’s not tied to any one storefront.
Gyro Aiming: Different Strengths
Both let you use the DualSense’s motion sensor for aiming, but they’re good at different things.
Steam Input has a genuinely well-built gyro-to-mouse system, including the ability to set up “mode shifts” so gyro only activates under specific conditions, holding a trigger to aim down sights, for example, and Steam’s action-set system makes this fairly intuitive to configure.
DSX also supports gyro-to-mouse conversion. Where you’ll see claims about DSX having a built-in UDP motion server for streaming gyro data into emulators like Cemu, RPCS3, or Ryujinx, that’s actually not accurate, that specific feature (based on the cemuhook protocol, commonly using port 26760) is documented as a DS4Windows feature, not something confirmed to exist in DSX. If you specifically need motion data streamed into a console emulator, DS4Windows is the more accurate tool for that particular job, not DSX.
Adaptive Triggers and Haptics
For games with genuine native DualSense support (certain Sony PC ports), neither tool should be running at all, you’ll want to close both Steam Input and DSX and connect over wired USB to let the game talk to the controller directly.
For games without native support, this is where the two diverge more. Steam Input treats your triggers as standard digital buttons, no adaptive resistance available. DSX, being built specifically around DualSense hardware, lets you force custom trigger resistance profiles onto games that don’t support adaptive triggers on their own, tighter resistance for a shooter, heavier pull for a racing game, that kind of customization.
Don’t Run Both at Once
If you decide to use DSX, make sure Steam Input is disabled for that controller in Steam’s settings first. Running both simultaneously means two separate systems are trying to translate the same physical input, which reliably causes double-input issues, a single button press registering as two separate actions.
Which One Should You Actually Use
If your gaming library lives almost entirely inside Steam and you don’t need adaptive trigger customization for non-native titles, Steam Input is genuinely the simpler choice, zero extra software, built-in community profiles, no setup beyond a checkbox.
If you regularly play through Xbox Game Pass, Epic, or other non-Steam storefronts, or specifically want deeper adaptive trigger control across your whole library rather than just Steam titles, DSX’s system-wide approach is the better fit.
It’s also entirely reasonable to use both, just not simultaneously, Steam Input for your Steam library, DSX switched on specifically when you’re playing something outside Steam that needs it.

A Middle Ground Worth Knowing About
If you’re not ready to commit to one or the other, it’s worth trying Steam Input first, since it requires zero installation and you can test it in minutes with a game you already own. If you find yourself repeatedly frustrated by a lack of adaptive trigger support, or you keep running into games outside Steam that just won’t recognize your controller properly, that’s your signal DSX is worth the extra setup. There’s no real cost to trying Steam Input first since it’s already sitting there built into a client most PC gamers already have installed anyway.
Performance Differences Worth Mentioning
In terms of raw input latency, both tools are generally close enough that most players won’t notice a meaningful difference in typical play. Steam Input has the advantage of being tightly integrated with Steam’s own overlay and input systems, since Valve controls both ends of that pipeline. DSX, running as an independent system-level tool, has slightly more overhead by virtue of being a separate application entirely, though in practice this rarely translates into noticeable input lag for most games. If you’re playing something extremely latency-sensitive, competitive fighting games or rhythm games, for example, it’s worth testing both directly in that specific game rather than assuming one is faster based on general reputation.
