If you’re chasing the lowest possible latency with a DualSense or DualShock 4 over Bluetooth, the chipset inside your adapter matters more than the Bluetooth version number printed on the box, 5.0 versus 5.4 versus 6.0 says less about real-world performance than which chipset manufacturer built the thing.
Chipset Matters More Than Version Number
Bluetooth adapters built around well-regarded chipsets, Realtek-based options in particular, tend to deliver noticeably more stable, lower-latency connections than budget adapters using less-established chipsets. Some cheaper adapters have been reported to introduce significant, inconsistent latency spikes that make them genuinely unsuitable for fast-paced gaming, even when they technically support a newer Bluetooth version on paper.
Don’t assume a “6.0” adapter automatically outperforms a “5.0” one, the chipset quality behind that version number is what actually determines your real-world experience.
Adapters Commonly Recommended for This Use Case
ASUS USB-BT500 A frequently recommended option for controller use specifically, built around a Realtek chipset known for reliable, stable performance. Works well when connecting multiple controllers simultaneously without dropped connections.
TP-Link UB500 (and UB500 Plus) Comparable performance to the ASUS option in most reports, at a generally lower price point. The standard version is compact, while the UB500 Plus adds an external, adjustable antenna, worth considering if your PC sits somewhere with obstructions between it and where you’re sitting (under a desk, behind a monitor stand, etc.).
Beyond these two, look for any adapter that explicitly advertises a Realtek chipset rather than an unnamed or generic one, that detail tends to matter more than any other spec on the box. Optimizing Your Setup Regardless of Adapter
Even a good adapter can underperform if it’s poorly placed or fighting other hardware for the same frequency band.
- Avoid rear motherboard ports. Your PC’s metal case and internal components can meaningfully degrade a Bluetooth signal. A front panel port, or a USB extension cable that lets you position the dongle up on your desk, tends to perform noticeably better than a dongle buried behind your tower.
- USB 3.0 ports can cause interference. USB 3.0’s signaling can emit radio frequency noise in a range that overlaps with the 2.4GHz band Bluetooth uses, this is a documented phenomenon, not just folklore. If you’re troubleshooting inconsistent latency, try a USB 2.0 port (often color-coded black rather than blue) and see if it helps.
- Reduce unnecessary data load. Lightbar effects, gyro, rumble, and touchpad tracking all add to the data DSX needs to send and receive. If you’re chasing every bit of consistency for competitive play, disabling features you’re not actively using for that session can help keep the connection lighter.
A Correction Worth Knowing
You may see claims elsewhere about manually setting DSX’s polling rate to 1000Hz for a guaranteed latency figure. That specific setting doesn’t exist in DSX, its developer has confirmed the app reads controller input as fast as the connection allows, without a manual polling override. Adapter quality and placement, covered above, are the factors that are actually within your control here, not a hidden settings toggle.
Similarly, be skeptical of guides citing extremely precise latency figures (claims down to fractions of a millisecond) for specific products, real-world Bluetooth performance varies enough by individual setup, interference, and even firmware revision that numbers that precise are rarely something you can reliably expect to replicate yourself.
Is a New Adapter Actually Worth It
If you’re currently using whatever Bluetooth adapter came built into your motherboard or a generic dongle and haven’t had specific problems, it’s worth first confirming adapter quality is actually your bottleneck before spending money. Test with a wired USB connection for comparison, if wired feels meaningfully more responsive and consistent than your current wireless setup, that’s a reasonable signal a better adapter (or just switching to wired for competitive sessions) is worth considering. If wired and wireless already feel similar, a new adapter probably won’t change much.

It’s worth distinguishing adapter-related latency from other, unrelated causes before spending money on new hardware. If your controller feels laggy specifically when other Bluetooth or 2.4GHz devices are active nearby (a wireless mouse, headset, or another controller), that points toward interference rather than a fundamentally weak adapter. If the lag is constant regardless of what else is running, and doesn’t improve with a different USB port or adapter position, the issue might be elsewhere entirely, a driver conflict, a background process competing for resources, or simply a setting inside a specific game rather than your Bluetooth hardware at all.
Buying Secondhand or Unbranded Adapters
If you’re considering a cheaper, less-known adapter to save money, it’s worth being cautious specifically about chipset transparency. Some budget adapters don’t clearly state which chipset they use anywhere on the packaging or product listing, which makes it hard to know in advance whether you’re getting something Realtek-based or an unnamed alternative that might perform inconsistently. When possible, look for a product listing or manufacturer page that explicitly names the chipset rather than buying based on Bluetooth version number alone, that one piece of information tends to be the most reliable predictor of how the adapter will actually perform for controller use specifically.
