Using the DS5Windows Battery Indicator: How to Monitor Power on PC

Having your DualSense die mid-match is a frustrating way to lose a game. Unlike on console, Windows doesn’t give you a clear, always-visible battery readout for PlayStation controllers by default. DSX fills that gap, showing you charge level in a few different places depending on how you want to keep an eye on it.

Checking Battery Level in DSX

The simplest option: open DSX and look at the Controllers tab. Your connected DualSense shows up with a live battery percentage next to it, along with a small icon indicating whether it’s running wirelessly or actively charging.

Adding a System Tray Icon

If you’d rather not alt-tab to check, DSX can show battery status directly in your Windows system tray. Look through DSX’s settings for a notification area or tray icon option and enable it, this gives you a quick glance at charge level near your clock without needing to open the app itself.

Battery Level on the Player LEDs

This is the part that’s easy to get wrong, and a lot of guides do. The main RGB lightbar around the touchpad doesn’t change color to reflect battery level, that’s a separate, smaller row of Player LEDs just below the touchpad. In DSX’s lightbar or player LED settings, there’s typically an option to show battery level through these indicator lights, more of them light up as charge increases, fewer as it drains, and they can flash while actively charging.

Your main touchpad lightbar color (whatever you’ve set it to) stays independent of this, it won’t shift through green, yellow, and red as your battery drops, despite what some guides claim. If you want both a specific lightbar color and a battery indicator, you can, they’re just controlled separately.

Low Battery Alerts

If there’s a flash-on-low-battery option available in your version of DSX, it’s worth turning on, set the threshold somewhere around 10-15% so you get a heads-up before the controller actually dies mid-session, rather than finding out the hard way.

Understanding What You’re Seeing

A few common battery-related situations and what they usually mean:

Charging icon showing, percentage climbing: Normal, the controller is drawing power over USB and charging as expected. Just leave it connected until it hits full or you’re ready to disconnect.

Battery dropping unusually fast: Bluetooth connections draw more power than USB, especially if the connection is weak or there’s interference nearby, which forces the controller to work harder to maintain the signal. If you’re noticing unusually fast drain, try moving closer to your PC or switching to USB for a session and see if the drain rate changes.

Stuck at 0% or won’t stop disconnecting: This is sometimes a Windows power-saving setting rather than an actual dead battery. Open Device Manager, find your USB Root Hub under Universal Serial Bus controllers, open its Properties, go to Power Management, and uncheck the option that lets Windows turn off the device to save power. This has fixed phantom disconnects for a lot of people whose controller wasn’t actually as low on battery as Windows thought.

A Note on Charging Speed

Older USB 2.0 ports are limited to less power output than USB 3.0 or a native USB-C port, so if your DualSense is completely dead, an older port might charge it more slowly, or in rare cases struggle to keep up if the battery is drawing more than the port can comfortably supply. If you’re topping up a badly drained controller, a USB 3.0 or Type-C port on your motherboard’s I/O panel will generally get you back to a usable charge faster.
