Few things ruin a session faster than your DualSense dropping connection mid-match. Random disconnects usually trace back to one of a few specific causes: Windows power-saving settings, Bluetooth interference, a weak cable, or an outdated driver. Here’s how to work through each one.
Disabling Windows Power-Saving for USB and Bluetooth
By default, Windows can cut power to USB ports and Bluetooth radios it thinks are idling or drawing too much energy, which causes an instant disconnect when it kicks in.
- Press Win + X and open Device Manager
- Expand the Bluetooth section, right-click your Bluetooth adapter, and open Properties
- Go to the Power Management tab and uncheck “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power”
- Scroll down and expand “Universal Serial Bus controllers”
- Right-click each USB Root Hub entry, open Properties, and uncheck the same power-saving option

Fixing Wireless Signal Issues
If you’re playing wirelessly and disconnects happen every few minutes, weak signal or interference is almost certainly the cause, DualSense controllers send a lot of data over Bluetooth, so any signal degradation shows up quickly.
Attach your motherboard’s Wi-Fi/Bluetooth antenna. If your motherboard has built-in wireless and came with an external antenna in the box, and you haven’t screwed it into the back of your case, do that now. Without it, Bluetooth range can be surprisingly short, sometimes just a couple of feet, causing disconnects that have nothing to do with your controller or software settings.
Avoid USB 3.0 ports for Bluetooth dongles. USB 3.0’s signaling can emit radio frequency interference that overlaps with the 2.4GHz band Bluetooth uses, this is a documented phenomenon. If you’re using a small USB Bluetooth adapter, try a USB 2.0 port (often black rather than blue) instead.
Checking Your USB-C Cable
If you’re playing wired and disconnects happen when you shift your hands or move the controller, the cable itself may be the problem.
Many cheap cables, especially ones bundled with phone chargers, are wired only for power delivery and lack the internal data lines a PC needs for reliable controller tracking. Swap to a cable you know is rated for data transfer, the cable that shipped with your PS5 console is a reliable example, and connect it directly to a motherboard USB port on the back of your case rather than an unpowered front-panel hub or splitter.
Understanding ViGEmBus’s Current Status
Here’s an important, accurate update: ViGEmBus was officially retired in November 2023 (due to a trademark conflict, not a technical failure), and its intended successor, a project called VirtualPad, is in active development. As of now, ViGEmBus continues to work normally and remains what DSX and similar tools currently rely on, there’s no broken or “outdated” version you need to urgently replace.
If you’re dealing with a corrupted ViGEmBus installation specifically (not just general disconnects), a tool called Legacinator can help clean up old or conflicting driver files, this is a legitimate utility from the same developer ecosystem, worth knowing about if a reinstall doesn’t resolve driver-related issues on its own.
To reinstall ViGEmBus cleanly:
- Open Windows Settings, Apps, Installed Apps
- Search for “ViGEmBus” and uninstall it
- Restart your PC
- Reinstall from its official GitHub release page
Checking Your Battery Level
A DualSense running critically low on battery can behave erratically before fully dying, including power-cycling its radio in ways that look like random disconnects rather than a clean shutdown. Check your battery percentage in DSX’s Controllers tab, if it’s low, that’s worth ruling out before assuming a deeper connection problem.
Putting It Together
Random disconnects are almost always a configuration issue rather than a sign of a failing controller. Work through power management settings first, since that’s the most common cause, then check signal quality (antenna, port choice) if you’re wireless, or cable quality if you’re wired. Isolating Which Fix Actually Worked
If you’re troubleshooting multiple potential causes at once, it’s worth changing one thing at a time rather than applying every fix simultaneously. Disable power-saving settings first and test for a while before touching anything else, if disconnects stop, you’ve found your cause and don’t need to also swap cables or attach an antenna. If they continue, move on to the next likely cause. This takes a bit more patience than fixing everything at once, but it means you’ll actually know what resolved the issue, which matters if the problem ever recurs after a Windows update resets a setting you’d changed.
When It’s Genuinely a Hardware Problem
If you’ve worked through every software and configuration fix here and disconnects persist regardless of connection type (both wired and wireless failing similarly), it’s worth considering that the controller itself might have a hardware issue, a failing internal battery, a damaged USB-C port, or worn Bluetooth hardware. This is less common than a configuration problem, but not impossible, especially on an older controller that’s seen heavy use. Testing the same controller on a different PC, or a different controller on your PC, can help isolate whether the problem is following the controller or staying with your system.
